Fall Training

Report fall training January 10, 2024

Today it was the turn of the last 30 of the total 90 participants for their fall training. Again, a full room of interested participants looking expectantly at Saskia (occupational therapist) and Rachelle (community sports coach at meer Moerdijk)

“How great that you are all here and have taken the first step towards reducing falls yourselves. You are the last 30 participants and I hope you will experience this day as valuable as the participants before you!”

Opens Rachelle.

After this the floor passes to Saskia Tetteroo, she is an occupational therapist and leads the theory part of the fall training. Once again the question is asked who has ever fallen, and once again many fingers are raised. We, too, have been confronted with the amount of fall incidents during the past training sessions and the double glazing that will only increase the likelihood of fall incidents in the coming years. This is precisely why we are incredibly pleased with the amount of registrations that have come in over the past few months.

Saskia takes the time to answer all the questions the participants have. Besides the theory of falls, the importance of exercise is also discussed. You can maintain muscle strength and balance through sports. Very important, and this is something the participants find out even more during the practical part!

After lunch provided by Trefpunt, it is time for the practice portion. This is again given by Arno Yarzagaray, karate instructor and owner of Karate Moerdijk. He has a lot of experience with falling and takes the participants step by step to the correct falling technique. The participants first try the exercises on a small mat on the ground and the participants who have difficulty bending down try the exercises directly on the thick mat! It is clear why muscle strength was emphasized during the theory; keeping your chin on your chest during a fall demands a lot from your abdominal muscles. And let that be very important, head injury is one of the most common consequences of a fall.... So abdominal muscles work out!

There is a lot of laughter and watching each person perform the fall exercise, you learn from that too!

We closed by asking what everyone thought of the day.

“Great, and very cozy!”

“I learned a lot, and laughed really hard!”

“I didn't expect to learn much today, but I heard a lot of new things. I'm glad I went, thanks for the organization!”

 Rachelle closes the day

“Thank you for coming, this was the first step but remember what we said. Keep moving, invest in your own health and exercise a lot. If necessary, go to a physical therapist who offers comprehensive fall training. I thank you for your confidence in our training, see you soon, our paths will surely cross again!”

We would like to thank the cross association Zevenbergen Langeweg for approaching meer Moerdijk and thank Arno Yagazaray and Saskia Tetteroo for sharing their knowledge! Also interested in fall training organized by meer moerdijk? Request fall training on the website and Rachelle will contact you!
